Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has pledged to unlock the state’s tourism potential, focusing on the development of its waterways to enhance economic prosperity.

Speaking at the Lagos Boat Regatta 2024, held over the weekend, the governor emphasized his administration’s commitment to creating a strong ecosystem for tourism while expanding the state’s transportation system.

The event, themed “Our Water, Our Heritage, Our Life,” took place across the five divisions of Lagos, showcasing the state’s rich cultural heritage and potential as a tourism hub.

Governor Sanwo-Olu described the Boat Regatta as the beginning of a series of activities planned for the Yuletide season, underscoring its importance in demonstrating the state’s dedication to promoting its tourism industry.

“We are excited to finally host this boat regatta, the first of many events that will highlight the tourism potential of Lagos,” Sanwo-Olu said. “One-third of Lagos is surrounded by water, and we need to leverage our waterways not only for transportation but as a significant part of our tourism ecosystem. oday’s event is a celebration of Lagos’ waterways, with displays from all five divisions of the state.”

The governor, who also participated in a boat ride with executive council members, encouraged residents to relax and enjoy the beauty and serenity of Lagos’ waterways, emphasizing the state’s commitment to becoming a top global destination for tourism.

Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, the State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, highlighted that the Lagos Boat Regatta 2024 aimed to immerse participants in the state’s rich waterway culture.

She pointed out that the event was a catalyst for economic growth, providing opportunities for local businesses while solidifying Lagos’ position as a premier global tourist destination.

Benson-Awoyinka also noted that the regatta celebrated the vibrant community heritage and sustainability practices through a multi-sensory experience, incorporating parades, dance performances, and innovative space layouts.

The event was a vivid display of Lagos’ potential to become a hub for both cultural and economic tourism.
