Bode George, a former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has called on President Bola Tinubu to prioritize comprehensive restructuring of the country.
Commending the Supreme Court for its recent ruling on Local Government autonomy, George emphasized that the judiciary has once again proven to be the final hope for the common man.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the PDP leader urged the President to initiate a complete overhaul of the political system.
Referring to the Supreme Court’s decision, the statement highlighted the significance of the judgment, stating, “Thursday’s verdict, which prevents State Governments from retaining and using funds meant for local government councils, is not only a victory for democracy but also a major boost for Nigeria’s political and economic development.”
“The apex court’s verdict was clear: Allocations to Local Governments must be directly paid from the Federation Account to councils governed by democratically elected officials,” the statement continued.
George expressed his belief that the courageous decision of the Supreme Court will have far-reaching implications for the advancement of democracy in Nigeria, the most populous black country in the world and Africa’s largest democracy.
Furthermore, he emphasized that the verdict will enhance democratic principles at the grassroots level and promote transparency.
Acknowledging President Bola Tinubu’s statement applauding the Supreme Court’s verdict and discussing the topic of restructuring, George advised the President to go beyond mere acknowledgment, stating, “I want to urge the President to take it a step further because what Nigerians truly desire is a complete overhaul of the political system. That is the only way Nigeria can truly thrive. Nigerians yearn for comprehensive restructuring.”
In his call for total restructuring, Bode George emphasizes the need for transformative changes that will address the deep-rooted challenges and pave the way for a stronger Nigeria.
