President Bola Tinubu signed the new national minimum wage into law on Monday during a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The national assembly swiftly passed the bill last week. Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, and other members of the National Assembly leadership joined the FEC for the signing ceremony.
This marks the first time since the current democratic dispensation that the council, presided over by the president, has included the leadership of the legislature in the Council Chamber during an FEC meeting. Reports indicate their invitation was impromptu, with the national assembly leaders arriving at about 1:38 p.m.
Their involvement in the council meeting comes amid growing tension over a planned protest by some Nigerians against the rising cost of living in the country. Both the executive and legislative branches have been ramping up efforts to alleviate the country’s hardship and trying to persuade protest organizers to call off the demonstration.
Before signing the bill into law, President Tinubu invited several officials to make comments.
