Legendary British actress, Dame Maggie Smith, has passed away at the age of 89. She died peacefully in hospital on Friday, September 27, according to a statement released by her sons, Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens.
“It is with great sadness we have to announce the death of Dame Maggie Smith,” the family shared in the statement. “She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday 27th September.”
Dame Maggie, who began her illustrious career as a teenager in Oxford, earned critical acclaim throughout her life, including an Academy Award for her role in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie in 1969.
In recent years, she captivated new audiences with her portrayal of the sharp-tongued Dowager Countess of Grantham in Downton Abbey and as the beloved Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter films.
