Premier League Giants Chelsea Football Club has reached an agreement with Aston Villa to secure the signing of Jhon Duran for a reported fee of £42 million.

Duran, who joined Villa from Chicago Fire in January 2023 for £14 million, has struggled to secure regular playing time under the management of Unai Emery, mainly due to the outstanding performances of Ollie Watkins.

Consequently, Duran has only started three Premier League matches and scored five goals as a substitute during the 2023/24 season.

Despite his limited opportunities, Duran has caught the attention of Chelsea, who have expressed interest in signing the talented Colombian striker since the winter transfer window.

Recent rumors have suggested the possibility of a swap deal involving Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, which has further fueled speculation regarding Duran’s potential move to Stamford Bridge. Villa, facing the need for financial stability to comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules, may consider this offer.

It appears that Chelsea and Villa have agreed on a fee in the region of €50 million (£42.1 million), with negotiations now underway with Duran to finalize his contract terms.

While there have been talks of Manchester City attacker Julian Alvarez as another potential target for Chelsea, Duran’s lower price point and young age may make him a more favorable option for the club.

Although Chelsea’s recruitment team is not overly concerned about adding a proven or Premier League-seasoned player due to their faith in Nicolas Jackson and the versatility of Christopher Nkunku, it is worth noting that Manchester City will likely put up a fight to retain Duran’s services.

It is important to mention that Villa is open to selling Duran, given his frustration with the lack of playing opportunities under Emery.

The club has reportedly valued him at around £40 million, which aligns closely with the fee Chelsea has agreed to pay. However, Gallagher, who is out of contract next year and valued at £50 million, may not be willing to be involved in a swap deal.

Chelsea’s interest in Duran has intensified following Benjamin Sesko’s decision to remain at RB Leipzig, as the Slovenian striker had been heavily linked with both Chelsea and Arsenal. As the transfer window progresses, it remains to be seen how the negotiations between Chelsea, Villa, and Duran will unfold.
