Chelsea forward Cole Palmer has shared that coach Enzo Maresca often has to intervene to prevent him from overtraining, admitting he would happily practice all day if given the chance.

Palmer has continued his impressive performance in the Premier League after winning the PFA Young Player of the Year award last season, netting seven goals and providing five assists in Chelsea’s first 12 matches.

The 21-year-old hopes to maintain his outstanding form as Chelsea prepares to face Aston Villa in what is expected to be an exciting match at Stamford Bridge this weekend.

To manage his workload this season, Chelsea has excluded Palmer from their Europa Conference League squad, which means he will miss the upcoming trip to Heidenheim, allowing him to rest for the Sunday matchup in west London.

Before the match, Palmer met with Chelsea icon Gianfranco Zola at Cobham to record a ‘Masterclass’ video for the Premier League’s official YouTube channel. During their time together, they exchanged passes and reviewed highlights from their illustrious careers.

Reflecting on his early days playing football in the park with his father, Palmer remarked, “It was significant because it was all about fun. My dad and friends were there, and we experimented with various skills while enjoying ourselves.”

He continued, “Being the smallest player meant I had to focus more on developing my skills. Now that I’ve caught up in height, things have become easier for me.”

Palmer explained how his smaller stature initially led to challenges on the field, stating, “I would often get pushed off the ball or lose it easily, so I had to think strategically.”

As he continues to shine in the Premier League, Palmer’s unwavering passion and commitment have played a crucial role in his rapid ascent, but Maresca has occasionally advised him to dial back his training intensity.

When asked if he stays behind for extra practice after sessions, Palmer responded, “Absolutely, if Maresca allows me! Sometimes it’s too much; I would stay all day if I could.”

Palmer was among several players who withdrew from England’s recent Nations League squad due to injury.
