Chidimma Adetshina, the newly-crowned Miss Universe Nigeria, has addressed critics who suggested her victory was based on sympathy rather than merit.

In a recent interview with ThePaan, Adetshina confidently responded to the backlash, emphasizing that she earned her win through dedication and perseverance.

“A lot of people felt like it was a pity win. I don’t think so,” she stated. “I feel like I worked so hard, coming from the South Africa journey. We spent like 10 weeks in camp, going through the whole journey.”

Adetshina acknowledged that her experience might have differed slightly from the other contestants, but she firmly believes that her efforts were on par with everyone else’s. “If you have to look at the journey that we have all been through, I feel like I had the same experience with other contestants,” she added.

Adetshina’s journey to the Miss Universe Nigeria crown wasn’t without challenges. Thepaan reports that she was previously forced to withdraw from South Africa’s version of the beauty pageant in August 2024 due to allegations of fraud and identity theft involving her mother. The situation led to xenophobic backlash and rejection of her nationality.

Despite these obstacles, Adetshina accepted an invitation to join the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant, where she ultimately claimed the crown.
