Former Nigerian President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has lauded China as an essential economic ally for Africa, underlining the significant impact the Asian country has had on the continent’s growth and development.
In a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, Obasanjo emphasized China’s vital contributions to improving infrastructure, facilitating technology transfer, and fostering cultural exchanges throughout Africa.
Representing the InterAction Council, a network of former leaders, Obasanjo shared his insights during a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping and officials from the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC) in Beijing, commemorating the association’s 70th anniversary.
Obasanjo commended President Xi for his dedication to global collaboration and multilateralism, highlighting that China’s leadership has significantly contributed to global peace and stability. “I am truly grateful to President Xi Jinping for his steadfast advocacy for international cooperation and multilateral approaches. His leadership has generated crucial momentum for peace on a global scale and has established a strong foundation for China’s continuous growth and progress,” he remarked.
Reflecting on the evolving relationship between China and Africa, Obasanjo noted the flourishing Sino-African ties in recent years, especially over the last two decades, which have positioned China as Africa’s foremost trading partner. He asserted that China’s involvement has not only enhanced infrastructure but also facilitated knowledge sharing and skill development among African nations.
“China stands as a significant economic partner for Africa. Our collaborative efforts have propelled infrastructure development and enabled technology transfers, creating avenues for mutual prosperity and inspiring growth,” Obasanjo stated. He praised China’s achievement in lifting over 800 million individuals out of poverty, describing it as a model for African nations striving to elevate the living standards of their populations.
Additionally, Obasanjo underscored the significance of people-to-people diplomacy in nurturing global cooperation, viewing it as a potent instrument that goes beyond traditional diplomatic channels. He highlighted the common objectives shared by the InterAction Council and CPAFFC, both dedicated to advancing global peace and development.
In his closing remarks, Obasanjo reaffirmed the InterAction Council’s commitment to collaborating with CPAFFC to enhance exchanges and foster understanding among nations, thereby contributing to global peace and strengthening international partnerships.
