Ola Olukoyede, the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), emphasized the severity of corruption, ranking it just behind terrorism as one of humanity’s most dangerous issues. Speaking in Abuja during the 2024 African Anti-Corruption Day at Unity Fountain, Olukoyede called for stronger and continuous efforts from Nigerians in all sectors to engage in whistleblowing to combat economic and financial crimes effectively.

Public corruption, bane of Nigeria's development, says EFCC boss

Olukoyede stressed that corruption poses a significant threat to individual, corporate, and national progress. He urged Nigerians to actively participate in the whistleblowing initiative, introduced by the Federal Government in December 2016. This policy encourages individuals to report fraud, bribery, misappropriation of government assets, and other corrupt practices.

He highlighted that the fight against corruption requires unwavering commitment, integrity, and the use of credible information. The EFCC has been implementing comprehensive strategies that include preventive measures, technological innovations, and international cooperation. Notably, Olukoyede discussed the use of technology in anti-corruption efforts, such as the Eagle Eye App for whistleblowing and advanced forensic laboratories to enhance investigation and prosecution capabilities.

In his address, Olukoyede mentioned the importance of a united front involving individuals, communities, and organizations globally to tackle corruption head-on. He referenced the theme of the 2024 African Anti-Corruption Day, “Effective Whistleblowing for a Corruption-Free Nigeria,” urging citizens to embrace the government’s whistleblowing policy wholeheartedly.

The EFCC’s strategies also involve preventive initiatives like Anti-Corruption Clubs in schools and addressing forex malpractices to stabilize the Nigerian economy. These efforts have shown significant results within a short period, demonstrating the effectiveness of a comprehensive approach in the fight against corruption.
