Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled October 9 to deliver a ruling on the fresh bail application submitted by the detained Binance executive, Tigran Gambaryan.
Gambaryan is currently facing charges of laundering $35.4 million, brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
During the hearing, Gambaryan’s counsel, Mark Mordi, emphasized the deteriorating health of his client, describing it as “perilous.” He appealed to the court to grant Gambaryan a six-week bail to seek adequate medical care outside the prison, as the current treatment in detention was deemed insufficient.
“We request that the court grants the second defendant (Gambaryan) bail on liberal terms for a six-week period to receive necessary medical attention. This application is supported by an affidavit from Sunday Ameh,” Mordi stated.
However, EFCC’s counsel, Ekele Iheanacho, opposed the bail request, arguing that Gambaryan could receive proper treatment at the Kuje correctional facility.
“It’s not enough to claim illness; the defendant must demonstrate a compelling reason why he cannot be treated within the facility,” Iheanacho argued, adding that a medical report from the State House Clinic revealed Gambaryan had refused prescribed medication and treatment.
After hearing arguments from both sides, Justice Nwite ordered the correctional facility to ensure Gambaryan receives unrestricted access to medical care and specialists as required. The judge then adjourned the case to October 9 for a ruling on the bail application.
