The 10th Assembly of Cross River State has unanimously reaffirmed Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem as its Speaker. This development came after a reconciliation facilitated by the state governor, Bassey Otu, and other critical stakeholders, who engaged with the 25-member Assembly in Calabar on Sunday. This information was disclosed in a statement released by the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Matthew Okache.

Ayambem had been impeached on Wednesday by 17 out of the 25 members of the House, who accused him of misappropriation of funds. The impeachment came about 11 months into his tenure, following a no-confidence vote passed by the majority of the lawmakers.

In his response to the reaffirmation, Ayambem expressed his gratitude to Governor Otu and the stakeholders for their significant efforts in restoring peace and stability within the state and the House of Assembly. He praised Governor Otu for demonstrating exceptional leadership during these challenging times.

Ayambem remarked, “The governor’s track record as a leader committed to peace has never been in doubt. This commitment has been evident since his time as a senator and continues in his current role as governor. I want to sincerely thank you for your genuine interest in and dedication to the peace and unity of Cross River State.”

He further extended his gratitude to all relevant stakeholders and his colleagues for their unwavering support. Ayambem pledged to cooperate fully with his fellow lawmakers to create a harmonious working environment that would contribute to the growth and progress of both the House of Assembly and Cross River State.

He underscored the shared responsibility of all members to collaborate for the advancement of the state, emphasizing the importance of unity and cooperation in enacting laws that serve the common good of all Cross Riverians.

Ayambem, who represents the Ikom 2 State Constituency, was elected Speaker of the 10th Cross River State House of Assembly in June 2023. He reiterated his commitment to leading with integrity, decency, and a focus on the welfare of all constituents.

The reaffirmation of Ayambem’s position as Speaker marks a significant moment for the Cross River State House of Assembly, highlighting the collective efforts of the governor and stakeholders to ensure stability and progress within the state’s legislative framework.

As the Assembly moves forward, the emphasis on unity and effective governance remains a central theme, promising a collaborative approach to the state’s legislative and developmental agenda.
