The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has condemned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for its failure to arrest former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, describing the commission’s current leadership as “grossly incompetent.”

In a statement released on Tuesday, CUPP expressed disappointment over the ongoing situation, stating that there was no valid excuse for the EFCC’s inaction when Bello voluntarily appeared at their office. Instead, they sent armed personnel to the Kogi governor’s lodge in Abuja later that night under the guise of making an arrest.

The statement, signed by ten officials including Mr. Emeka Igwe and Prof. Godswill Nnaji, criticized the EFCC for its mishandling of the situation, particularly given the previous declarations that Bello was wanted and placed on an international watchlist with INTERPOL’s assistance.

CUPP stated, “It is quite intriguing that the same man you have been hunting for walked into your headquarters in Abuja, and you let him walk away without as much as interrogating him.” They highlighted that a competent security agency would have managed the situation more effectively, suggesting that the current EFCC leadership is clueless about effective policing strategies.

Furthermore, the coalition criticized the EFCC’s decision to mobilize armed operatives to the governor’s residence to arrest Bello after he had previously made himself available. They argued that such actions could have led to serious consequences for Nigeria’s democracy.

CUPP called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to dismiss EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede, stating, “There is no valid excuse for committing those two errors of judgment by the EFCC.” They demanded clarity from the commission on its intentions and urged it to restore public confidence.
