Dangote Cement Plc has launched a new internship scheme for students from tertiary institutions across Nigeria, providing them with a unique opportunity to gain practical experience in the cement industry. The initiative was officially introduced during an event at Yaba College of Technology in Lagos on August 14, 2024.
The internship program is designed to last one year and is fully funded by Dangote Cement. It aims to offer hands-on training for engineering students, allowing them to apply their classroom knowledge to real-world situations. Tunde Mabogunje, the Regional Sales Director of Dangote Cement, emphasized that this initiative is part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts to bridge the gap between academic learning and practical application.
Mabogunje explained that the program will initially operate in Lagos and Kano States, with 20 students selected—10 from each state. The students were chosen based on their academic performance in Building Studies, as recommended by their respective institutions. They will receive training on the proper use of cement, specifically focusing on Dangote Cement products, in accordance with the standards set by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON).
The interns will be deployed to various construction sites, where they will work alongside technical officers from Dangote Cement who will supervise their activities. This hands-on experience is expected to prepare the students to become well-rounded professionals in the construction industry.
Mabogunje highlighted the importance of vocational and technical skills in the building sector, noting that a lack of these skills has negatively impacted the industry. He stated, “This internship program is a major step in the right direction towards addressing the skills gap. As trainees gain practical field experience, they will be well-prepared to make significant contributions to the industry.”
The Rector of Yaba College of Technology, Dr. Ibraheem Adedotun Abdul, praised Dangote Cement for this initiative, calling it a landmark achievement in corporate social responsibility. He expressed confidence that the participating students would meet expectations and successfully bridge the gap between their academic studies and practical experience.
Dr. Abdul also mentioned that the college has partnerships with various organizations to enhance students’ skills and that it is in the process of establishing an Industry Advisory Committee, which would include a representative from Dangote Cement.
Funmi Sanni, the National Sales Director of Dangote Cement, urged students to take full advantage of the internship opportunity. He noted that the students would receive compensation during their internship period, reinforcing the company’s commitment to quality and skill development.
This internship scheme reflects Dangote Cement’s dedication to fostering the next generation of professionals in the construction industry. By investing in the training and development of young engineers, the company aims to contribute positively to the economy and empower future leaders in the sector.
