Jigawa State Governor, Malam Umar Namadi, has confirmed that the death toll from the recent petrol tanker explosion has climbed to 171.

The governor made this known while receiving members of the House of Representatives, who visited to express their condolences. He also mentioned that those injured in the explosion are receiving treatment in various hospitals, with the state government covering all medical expenses.

“This is a devastating tragedy from God Almighty, and we are praying for His mercy,” the governor said.

After the meeting, Hon. Adamu Yakubu (PDP), who represents the Birninkudu/Buji Federal Constituency, expressed his shock at the number of lives lost in the explosion.

“It is truly shocking. There has never been an accident that claimed over 100 lives at once. Even during the Boko Haram crisis, there was no single incident where over 100 people died,” Yakubu remarked.

He praised the governor for his swift response and support for both the victims and the families of those who lost their lives. “The governor’s commitment to his people during this difficult time is commendable,” he added.

Hon. Yakubu further noted, “We are here to extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and relatives of the deceased, as well as to the victims, the governor, and the entire state. This is a tragic loss for everyone.”
