Prominent members of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Ondo State have shifted their allegiance to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
This shift comes just three months ahead of the governorship election scheduled for November 16 in the state.
During an event in Ondo town, the administrative center of Ondo West Local Government, state governor Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa warmly welcomed the defectors into the ruling party, urging existing members to accept them without prejudice.
Speaking on his behalf, the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Tayo Oluwatuyi, affirmed that the defectors had made a wise choice in aligning with the APC, asserting that it is the only party poised for victory in the upcoming election.
“They have joined us now, and I urge our leaders to support them and their followers. We must not reject them because politics thrives on numbers and diverse perspectives. Let’s unite for a common cause; he is a commendable individual,” the governor encouraged.
Former SDP House of Assembly candidate Mr. Azeez Ademoloye, who led the group of defectors, expressed their rationale for joining the APC, emphasizing that it is the only party capable of securing a win in the election, and they wished to be part of a victorious coalition.
“I ran for the House of Assembly on the SDP platform in the 2023 General Election. After thorough consultations, I concluded that the APC is the only party that can advance Ondo State,” he stated. “As you can see, I have numerous supporters, if not thousands, who are leaving our former party. I have a strong belief in this party and know I can contribute significantly to it.”
In his comments, Mr. Abiola Makinde, the House of Representatives member for Ondo West/Ondo East Federal Constituency, expressed enthusiasm about the influx of new members into the APC, highlighting that it reflects the party’s solid presence and positive influence in the state.
Makinde further noted that individuals like Ademoloye are crucial to realizing the party’s vision for progress, emphasizing that Ademoloye’s successful entrepreneurial background would bring valuable benefits to the youth within the party.
