In a notable political shift in Kano State, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin has formally accepted a wave of former members from the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP) into the All Progressives Congress (APC).
A statement from Barau’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, confirmed that hundreds of NNPP supporters from the Madobi and Gwale local government areas (LGAs) made the switch to the APC over the weekend. These regions are known to be strongholds for prominent NNPP leaders, including Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
Among the notable new members of the APC is Yahaya Sa’idu Kwankwaso, a former councillor from Kwankwaso Ward in Madobi LGA. He was joined by other significant NNPP figures, including Hon. Abdulhamid Ahmad Diso, a former deputy speaker from Diso Ward in Gwale LGA, and Hon. Shu’aibu Isa Kubaraci.
The defectors cited Senator Barau’s developmental initiatives in Kano State as their main reason for switching parties.
During a welcoming ceremony for the newcomers, Barau assured them of equal treatment within the APC, stating, “In the APC, everyone enjoys equal opportunities. This is a party for everyone, where no one is left out.”
He further characterized the defections as indicative of the NNPP’s diminishing influence in Kano, confidently asserting that the APC is poised for success in the 2027 elections. “The NNPP has become a mere shadow of its former self in Kano North. In Kano South, the APC will soon diminish its presence, confining it to only a few streets in Kano Central,” he remarked.
Barau emphasized his dedication to collaborating with the new members to foster development in Kano State, aligning his vision with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s agenda for national growth and prosperity.
This influx of new members underscores the increasing strength of the APC in Kano, potentially signaling significant political changes in the state’s landscape.
