The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) announced on Friday that the Nigerian armed forces remain committed to upholding the country’s democracy and will not support any unconstitutional changes to the government.
This declaration was made in a statement distributed to Defence Correspondents in Abuja, which provided an update on the ongoing military operations conducted by the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) and other security agencies across various theaters of operations as of August 8th.
The statement emphasized the military’s readiness to collaborate with other security forces to address the security challenges facing the nation. It further stated, “The armed forces are fully prepared to tackle emerging threats,
Particularly those stemming from the current protests in the country, which have taken on a violent and subversive nature. We will not relent in our efforts to ensure national stability, in line with our constitutional responsibilities.”
The military reiterated its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the nation’s democracy, stating that it firmly opposes any unconstitutional attempts to change the government. Additionally, the armed forces pledged to create an enabling environment that would support the government’s efforts to address issues such as poverty and hardship in the country.
In the report covering military operations during the week under review, the DHQ revealed that troops neutralized 108 individuals and arrested 172 others. Among those apprehended were 32 suspects involved in oil theft, and 214 kidnapped hostages were rescued.
In the South-South region, military operations successfully prevented the theft of approximately N1.35 billion worth of resources. Troops also recovered 66 assorted weapons and 4,087 rounds of ammunition, including one DShK machine gun, two GPMGs, one RPG launcher, and 37 AK-47 rifles. The recovered items also included 19 vehicles, 44 motorcycles, three mobile phones, and N4.99 million in cash.
In the Niger Delta, troops discovered and destroyed 487 dugout pits, 32 boats, and 12 storage tanks used for illegal refining. The military also recovered 1,133,800 liters of stolen crude oil, 228,770 liters of illegally refined diesel (AGO), 100 liters of kerosene (DPK), and 20,000 liters of petrol (PMS).
The DHQ concluded by reiterating that the military remains steadfast in its mission to protect Nigeria’s democracy and will not allow any efforts to undermine the democratic process. All arrested suspects, recovered items, and rescued hostages have been handed over to the appropriate authorities for further action.
