Dr. Doyin Okupe, a former spokesperson for the presidency, has firmly stated that he has never publicly criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during his political journey.
In an interview held in Lagos on Sunday, Okupe responded to claims suggesting that he was among the politicians who once criticized Tinubu but have since shifted to support him, labeling these assertions as unfounded and without merit.
“Check my entire history with the Labour Party and the PDP; at no point have I ever criticized Bola Tinubu, even though we have never been part of the same political faction,” Okupe asserted.
He reflected on their shared experiences during the NADECO (National Democratic Coalition) era, highlighting the time when both figures opposed military rule, albeit from different perspectives.
“A good man does not undermine another good person. We had a significant yet understated connection during the NADECO days. He was overseas while we coordinated efforts here in Nigeria,” he explained.
“When we were under intense pressure from the government, running from place to place, it forged a bond that transcends political differences,” he added.
Okupe challenged anyone to present evidence of him criticizing Tinubu, reaffirming, “There is no instance where you will find me speaking ill of Bola Tinubu.”
He also disclosed that he had stepped back from his political ambitions for the 2023 general elections at the request of Yoruba elders, who encouraged him to support a candidate from the South East to foster national unity. Despite the loss of his preferred candidate, Okupe expressed that there is no reason not to support Tinubu as the President.
“As a dedicated politician, I believe it is my responsibility to support the leader of our country for the sake of unity and progress,” Okupe stated.
He described his interactions with Tinubu as insightful, noting the President’s commitment to reform and national advancement.
“He is a reformer and a thoughtful leader. I have always believed that if given the chance, he will excel. This belief motivates my support for him,” Okupe elaborated.
Okupe clarified that his decision to back Tinubu stemmed from personal conviction rather than pressure or financial incentives.
“Just as Peter Obi did not solicit or compensate me for my support before I fully committed to promoting him, Tinubu also did not seek my endorsement or lobby for it,” he remarked.
“I act based on my conscience and principles, and I am not influenced by money or external pressures,” Okupe emphasized.
He concluded by reaffirming his position, stating, “I have never criticized Tinubu. You can examine all my statements.”
The former spokesman expressed his confidence in Tinubu’s potential to facilitate positive transformations, pledging to lend his support to the President’s endeavors for the betterment of the nation.
