After considerable pressure, Adeola Ajayi, the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), has lifted the restrictions on Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Kanu’s legal team, headed by lead counsel Aloy Ejimakor, was able to meet with the Biafran leader at the DSS facility in Abuja. Ejimakor credited the intervention of Obi Aguocha, a member of the House of Representatives representing the Ikwuano, Umuahia North, and South Federal constituencies, as pivotal in persuading the DSS to lift the restrictions.
In a post on X, Ejimakor stated: “Under the directive of the DG DSS, the #MnkLegalTeam conducted our first successful visit with MAZI NNAMDI KANU since September 27. Mazi Ndidi Awurum, who traveled from the US, was with us. Our robust legal efforts, along with Hon. Obi Aguocha’s intervention, played a critical role in this development.”
The DSS had previously barred Kanu from meeting with his legal representatives following a disturbance he caused at the Federal High Court in Abuja, where he requested the recusal of Justice Binta Nyako.
However, the court mandated the DSS to lift the restrictions, threatening imprisonment for the DSS Director General should he fail to comply with the order.
In the midst of the restrictions, Aguocha personally visited Kanu on Thursday, October 24, 2024, at the DSS facility in Abuja. Following their meeting, the lawmaker expressed confidence that he had successfully addressed the issue of restrictions placed on Kanu by the DSS.
