The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared its intention to contest the results of the September 21, 2024, governorship election as the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal reconvenes on Monday.

This follows the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announcing Governor Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the election.

The commitment to overturn the election results was articulated in a communiqué released after a meeting of the party’s leadership, including its gubernatorial candidate, Asue Ighodalo.

The communiqué, signed by Henry Tenebe, Secretary of the Edo State PDP Caretaker Committee, and shared with the media on Sunday, highlighted that the meeting was called by Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, Chairman of the State Caretaker Committee.

The PDP emphasized its stance that it was unjustly deprived of victory and assured its supporters of its determination to reclaim what it describes as a stolen mandate.

The communiqué stated: “Following thorough discussions regarding the party’s situation and the conditions in Edo State, we reached several resolutions:

“The party reaffirmed its commitment to recovering the mandate rightfully bestowed upon it by the people during the last governorship election. We urge all party members and the citizens of Edo State to continue their support and prayers as we embark on this challenging journey.

“The meeting recognized and expressed gratitude for the dedication, loyalty, and perseverance of party members and supporters throughout Edo State, encouraging them to remain steadfast in their backing for the party and its leadership.

“Concerns were voiced about the current state of affairs in Edo under the APC administration, noting significant regressions over recent months.

“The PDP reiterated its unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law and constitutional democracy within the state, emphasizing that law, order, and security are crucial for the peace, progress, and development of Edo State and Nigeria as a whole.

“In a show of solidarity, the party Chairmen collectively expressed confidence in the State Caretaker Committee led by Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, as well as in the party’s candidate from the recent governorship election, Dr. Asue Ighodalo. They commended both leaders for their exemplary guidance and efforts in advancing unity and progress within the Edo State chapter of the PDP.”
