The Edo State Government has made serious allegations against Philip Shaibu, the former deputy governor, accusing him of impersonating the current deputy governor, Omobayo Marvelous Godwins, and raising concerns about a potential security threat.
This development follows a recent ruling from a Federal High Court in Abuja that reinstated Shaibu as deputy governor on July 17. However, the Edo Assembly has appealed this decision and has requested a stay of execution.
In an official statement, Chris Nehikhare, the Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, expressed, “We have been informed that Philip Shaibu is communicating with various institutions and organizations, both within and outside the state, while posing as the deputy governor.”
He further emphasized, “Shaibu is not the deputy governor, and any communication from him should be disregarded as fraudulent.”
The government reiterated that the matter of Shaibu’s reinstatement is still under judicial review, affirming that the current status holds that Omobayo Marvelous Godwins is the legitimate deputy governor.
They have sought a court order to stay the execution of the reinstatement, alongside a request to suspend the judgment and prevent Shaibu from attending any official functions as deputy governor.
Nehikhare cautioned that any interactions or transactions with Shaibu could lead to a security breach and urged organizations to exercise vigilance. He also called upon security agencies to ensure that Shaibu is held responsible for any security incidents resulting from his actions.
The Edo Assembly has formally appealed the court’s ruling and requested a stay of execution while the appeal is pending. The next court hearing regarding the motions filed by both the State Government and the Edo House of Assembly concerning the alleged reinstatement is set for September 24, 2024.
Meanwhile, the government has reassured citizens that Omobayo Marvelous Godwins remains in office and continues to fulfill his responsibilities as usual.
