Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has announced his intention to adopt the developmental strategies employed by Senator Godswill Akpabio during his tenure in Akwa Ibom to foster progress in Edo State.
This commitment was revealed in a statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, on Sunday. Okpebholo made these comments at a reception held in his honor in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State.
Reflecting on Akpabio’s impactful governance from 2007 to 2015, Okpebholo expressed his admiration for the significant advancements achieved under Akpabio’s leadership and pledged to replicate that success in Edo.
“The individual I affectionately refer to as ‘the uncommon man’ accomplished remarkable feats during his time as governor. Today, Akwa Ibom’s narrative cannot be told without acknowledging Akpabio’s transformative contributions,” Okpebholo remarked.
He added, “Before his administration, Akwa Ibom was often overlooked, but in just eight years, he turned Uyo into one of Nigeria’s premier cities. Upon becoming governor, I resolved to observe and implement the same developmental framework for my constituents. My experiences during this visit have only strengthened my belief that we can achieve similar results in Edo, just as Akpabio did in Akwa Ibom.”
In his address, Okpebholo also praised Akpabio’s legislative achievements, noting that he has successfully led a cohesive legislative body that effectively balances and supports the executive branch for the benefit of the nation.
“Akpabio’s legislative accomplishments are unparalleled; no other Senate President has made such a significant impact. In just one year, he has achieved what others could not in eight,” Okpebholo stated. “He has a unique ability to diffuse tension and take control when challenges arise in the Senate.”
He expressed gratitude to Akpabio for inviting him to Akwa Ibom, emphasizing that the visit was meant to inspire him to apply similar strategies in Edo. “I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to you, His Excellency, the Senate President. I have heeded your guidance, and I assure you that we will implement what we have learned from Akwa Ibom in Edo.”
In response, Akpabio commended Governor Okpebholo for his humility and people-focused governance style, highlighting that his willingness to learn from successful leaders is a strong indicator of his potential for success in office.
