The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has initiated an investigation into the alleged misappropriation of campaign funds for the 2023 elections by the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and the failure of its presidential National Working Committee to compensate party agents who participated in the elections nationwide.
As part of the investigation, the EFCC has summoned the National Secretary of the party, Oginni Olaposi Sunday, to provide evidence regarding the allegations of fraud against Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso and his Private Secretary, Folashade Aliu, concerning the alleged mishandling of party funds through a secret campaign and donations account.
According to reports, the petition submitted by Oginni also implicates the signatories to the United Bank of Africa (UBA) account of the NNPP, including Prof. Rufai Alkali, Abba Kawu, and Dipo Olayokun.
Sources suggest that the EFCC might be compelled to investigate the sudden wealth of Dipo Olayokun and the acquisition of properties in prime areas of Abuja within a span of two years during his tenure as a signatory to the NNPP’s account.
Confirming the development, Oginni, the party’s National Secretary, acknowledged his invitation to the EFCC headquarters in Abuja, where he provided a statement and clarified the allegations made in the petition against Kwankwaso and his team, accusing them of a fraudulent misappropriation of N2.5 billion.
Oginni expressed satisfaction with the professionalism displayed by EFCC officers during the process, stating that he faced no harassment or intimidation.
He further emphasized that the EFCC is determined to ensure the veracity of the allegations and maintain a non-partisan approach.
Oginni expressed confidence in the EFCC’s commitment to combating corruption at all levels, without sparing anyone involved in unlawful activities.
