The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ola Olukoyede, revealed that the Commission has received an overwhelming number of petitions from the public over the past year.
During a courtesy visit by the Special Envoy for West Africa, Dr. Charles Omini, at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja, Mr. Olukoyede emphasized the Commission’s commitment to combating economic and financial crimes in Nigeria.
Mr. Olukoyede stated that the EFCC’s tireless efforts are driven by the goal of ensuring good governance and providing Nigerians with a taste of it. He highlighted the staggering statistic that the Commission has received over 14,000 credible petitions in just the span of twelve months.
“We are dedicated to serving our country and giving Nigerians a chance to experience good governance. These petitions are a testament to the persistent challenges we face in fighting economic and financial crimes,” Mr. Olukoyede remarked.
He further emphasized that Nigeria, with its abundant natural and mineral resources, should not have a population suffering from poverty.
Mr. Olukoyede urged for proper resource management, accountability, and the implementation of the right policies to bridge the gap between Nigeria and developed nations.
“Fighting corruption is a battle that can be won if we all come together and prioritize good governance.
There are countries that have overcome worse situations than ours, and we can do the same. Let us unite and make the right choices for the betterment of our nation,” he stated with conviction.
Mr. Olukoyede encouraged the Special Envoy to play a crucial role in raising awareness among Nigerians about the detrimental impact of corruption on their lives and the importance of their participation in the fight against it.
He emphasized that the fight against corruption is not solely the responsibility of the EFCC but requires a collective effort from all citizens.
“Corruption deprives people of their rights to a better life and good governance. We must work together to enlighten the public and ensure that everyone understands the gravity of this issue. Let us foster collaboration and build a stronger Nigeria,” Mr. Olukoyede concluded.
