The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued a warning about new and dangerous trends in internet fraud. The agency says that fraudsters are now using people for rituals and engaging in sextortion.

The Acting Zonal Director of the EFCC’s Lagos Zonal Command, Michael T. Wetkaz, announced during a visit from the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Lagos State Sector Command, Corps Commander Patrick Davou.

Wetkaz said that internet fraudsters are now using people for rituals in addition to the usual scams like “Yahoo Yahoo.” He also warned that sextortion, a form of blackmail where victims are threatened with the release of private photos or videos, is becoming more common.

Wetkaz emphasized that the EFCC is committed to fighting cybercrime and has made significant progress in recent years. He mentioned that the commission has investigated over 100 cases involving internet fraudsters and has successfully prosecuted many of them.

The EFCC urges the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities. They also emphasized the need for collaboration between different government agencies to combat cybercrime effectively.

Corps Commander Patrick Davou of the FRSC expressed his support for the EFCC’s efforts to fight cybercrime. He said that the FRSC is committed to working with the EFCC to share information and resources.

The EFCC also urged parents to monitor their children’s online activities and be aware of the signs of internet fraud. They noted that in many cases, the parents of internet fraudsters are aware of their children’s activities but do nothing to stop them.

The EFCC’s warning about new trends in internet fraud highlights the ongoing threat posed by cybercriminals. Everyone needs to be aware of these threats and take steps to protect themselves. By working together, the EFCC and other agencies can help to combat cybercrime and make the internet a safer place for everyone.
