The Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) has announced that the Egbema Power Station, located in Imo State, is expected to be completed by 2025. This power plant, with a capacity of approximately 375 megawatts (MW), is part of Nigeria’s efforts to enhance its energy infrastructure and provide reliable electricity to its citizens.

The Egbema Power Station is one of the ten power plants under the Nigerian National Integrated Power Project (NIPP), which was initiated in 2004 during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo. The NDPHC, established as a limited liability company, manages these projects to improve Nigeria’s power supply. The Egbema plant was initially commissioned in 2017 but has faced delays in becoming fully operational.

During a recent inspection of the facility in the Ohaji-Egbema local government area, NDPHC’s Managing Director, Jenifer Adighije, expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far. She emphasized that once completed, the power plant will significantly boost energy capacity by enhancing transmission to the national grid. This will ensure the delivery of reliable and affordable electricity to underserved communities in Nigeria.

Adighije highlighted the importance of the project in aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision to scale up energy production and bridge the access gap for vulnerable Nigerians. She urged the company responsible for the project to expedite efforts to meet the completion timeline.

The NDPHC is committed to collaborating with state governments and other stakeholders to provide affordable electricity across Nigeria. The company reiterated its readiness to support the project and ensure its timely completion. This collaboration is crucial in addressing the dynamic challenges of the power sector and meeting the growing energy demands of the country.

The Egbema Power Station, built by Rockson Engineering Company Limited and Steag West Africa Limited, was initially funded from the Federation Account and the Excess Crude Account, which belong to all Nigerian states and the Federal Government. The plant’s completion is expected to contribute significantly to Nigeria’s energy capacity, supporting economic growth and development.

The completion of the Egbema Power Station is a critical step in Nigeria’s journey towards improving its power infrastructure. By enhancing the national grid’s capacity, the project aims to provide more reliable electricity to Nigerians, particularly in underserved areas. As the NDPHC works towards the 2025 completion date, the successful delivery of this project will mark a significant achievement in Nigeria’s energy sector.
