Tragedy struck this morning in the Ado-Odo Ota area of Ogun state as an elderly woman was swept away by floodwaters. The incident occurred following heavy rainfall that led to significant flooding in the region.
Eyewitnesses reported that the woman, who has yet to be identified, was attempting to cross a waterlogged street when she lost her footing and was caught in the strong current.
Local residents immediately rushed to her aid, forming a human chain and using makeshift ropes in a desperate attempt to pull her to safety.
Despite their valiant efforts, the force of the water proved too strong. Several people who tried to rescue her were themselves nearly swept away and had to abandon the attempt to avoid further casualties.
Emergency services were quickly alerted, but by the time they arrived, there was no sign of the woman.
Search and rescue operations are currently underway, with local authorities urging residents to stay away from flooded areas and exercise caution during the ongoing heavy rains.
