A tragic accident at the Abule Osun bus stop along the Badagry Expressway in Lagos claimed the lives of eleven individuals, including three children on Tuesday.

Emergency responders, who arrived swiftly at the scene, managed to rescue three others, including two children.

The deceased comprised three adult females, four female children, and a male child, all of whom were occupants of a Toyota Sienna space bus that collided with a stationary tipper truck on the roadway.

Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), confirmed the incident in a statement on Wednesday. According to reports, the passengers in the bus had just arrived in Lagos from the Eastern part of Nigeria and were heading to a park to drop off passengers when the accident occurred.

Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu stated, “In response to distress calls received through the 767/112 Toll-Free Lines at 11:07 PM, LASEMA activated its Dolphin Response Team from the Igando base. Upon arrival at the scene of the accident on the inward lane of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, we discovered that a Toyota Sienna bus with registration number BDG 342 FS, heavily loaded with passengers, had crashed into a parked SHACMAN truck, whose registration number remains unknown.”

He elaborated that the truck, which was carrying granite, was parked in a manner that blocked about half of the carriageway. The Toyota Sienna, traveling at high speed, collided with the truck from behind without any prior warning.

While ten individuals died on the spot, one of the survivors succumbed to injuries later at the hospital.

The injured passengers were promptly rescued and transported to a nearby hospital by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) before the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency’s (LASEMA) LRT arrived at the scene.
