The Institute of Educational Leadership Practitioners of Nigeria (IELPN) has emphasized the importance of adopting modern teaching techniques to improve the quality of education in the country. This was a key topic of discussion at the 2024 international conference of the IELPN, held on Wednesday in Abuja.

During the conference, education stakeholders highlighted that moving away from traditional teaching methods towards innovative, technology-driven approaches could significantly enhance the learning experience for students. The event brought together educators, leaders, and policymakers to discuss how embracing new teaching strategies could lead to a paradigm shift in education.

In his keynote address, Professor Paulinus Chijioke Okwelle, the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for College of Education, urged educational institutions to embrace technological innovations in their teaching processes. He pointed out that the outdated methods of lectures and handouts are no longer sufficient to meet the needs of today’s students.

Professor Okwelle stressed that for teachers and lecturers to effectively use these innovative pedagogies, they must first equip themselves with leadership skills and be open to adopting new technologies. He encouraged educators to continuously update their teaching methods to ensure they are providing quality education that meets the demands of the 21st century.

The conference also featured speeches from key figures in the education sector, including IELPN President, Professor Sunday Osaat, and the Institute’s Registrar, Dr. Taiwo Olufunmilayo Olusa. Both leaders outlined the efforts made by the Institute, in collaboration with other organizations in the education sector, to drive an educational revolution in Nigeria. They emphasized that embracing innovative teaching techniques is crucial for preparing students to succeed in a rapidly changing world.

One of the highlights of the event was the induction of 24 new fellows into the IELPN. Among the inductees was Dr. Badamosi Ayuba Targa, the Dean of the School of Education at FCT College of Education, Zuba. In his remarks, Dr. Targa reiterated the need for educators to adopt innovative methods that can better facilitate the learning process for students.

The theme of the 2024 IELPN international conference, “Revolutionising Education: Harnessing Innovative Pedagogies and Leadership for 21st Century Students,” underscored the focus on modernizing education in Nigeria. Participants at the conference agreed that the adoption of new teaching strategies is essential for enhancing student engagement and learning outcomes.

The IELPN conference highlighted the urgent need for Nigeria’s educational institutions to modernize their teaching methods. By embracing innovative technologies and pedagogies, educators can create a more dynamic and effective learning environment that better prepares students for the challenges of the future. The discussions at the conference serve as a call to action for schools, colleges, and universities across the country to rethink their approaches to education and take concrete steps towards implementing these changes.
