In a bizarre turn of events, the family of a man in Ibadan stormed a local hospital and took away a newborn baby, claiming the mother is a witch.
The incident, which occurred at a private hospital in the Beere area, left both hospital staff and onlookers in shock.
According to eyewitnesses, the woman, who gave birth to her first child via a Caesarean section, was still recovering when the husband’s relatives arrived. It was reported that the family members arrived in large numbers, expressing dissatisfaction with the mode of delivery.
They alleged that the woman’s inability to give birth naturally was a sign of witchcraft and insisted that the child must not remain with the “evil” mother.
Sources at the hospital revealed that despite pleas from the medical staff and the new mother herself, the husband’s family forcefully took the child, claiming they were protecting the baby from being “spiritually harmed.”
Attempts by hospital officials to involve security personnel were unsuccessful as the family left before any intervention could be made.
Neighbors who spoke anonymously stated that there had been long-standing tensions between the woman and her in-laws, with previous accusations of witchcraft even before her pregnancy. However, they never imagined the situation would escalate to this level.
The woman is currently receiving further care at the hospital, while concerned parties have called on relevant authorities to step in and resolve the matter. Local community leaders have expressed their dismay at the situation, emphasizing the need for proper education and awareness to curb such harmful beliefs and practices.
This unfortunate incident highlights the persistent issue of stigmatization and superstition that continue to plague some families, leading to acts that harm vulnerable individuals.
Community elders and social advocates are urging for dialogue and mediation to return the baby to its mother and prevent further escalation.
