The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to safeguarding the judiciary from any form of manipulation or undue influence.

He made this pledge on Monday in Abuja during the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of Judges’ Quarters in the Katampe District.

The project, which is set to provide 40 homes for judges of various ranks, has a completion target of 15 months.

According to Wike, the initiative underscores President Bola Tinubu’s dedication to improving the welfare of judicial officers and strengthening the judiciary’s independence.

“The independence of the judiciary has always been a key concern for Mr. President,” Wike said.

“He often asks, ‘How can we truly achieve judicial independence?’ One of the critical steps taken is amending the constitution to extend the retirement age of judicial officers to 70, as mentioned by the Minister of Justice and Attorney General.”

Wike further emphasized the importance of ensuring favorable working conditions for judges, particularly in terms of their remuneration and benefits.

“If we are serious about insulating the judiciary from external pressures, we must improve their conditions of service. Mr. President recently amended the salaries and allowances of judicial officers, a move aimed at empowering them to make unbiased decisions,” he explained.

In addition to financial security, Wike highlighted the importance of housing for judges. “Housing is a fundamental need, and judges are no exception.

By providing homes through an owner-occupier scheme, we ensure that judges retire with peace of mind, knowing they have secure accommodation. This is a practical step toward preventing interference in their work,” he added.

Wike stressed that when judicial officers have secure tenure, proper remuneration, and housing, they are more likely to remain steadfast in their duties, without fear of external manipulation.

“Mr. President’s legal agenda is not just about words but action, and this housing project is a clear demonstration of that commitment.”

Minister of State for the FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, also expressed her gratitude to Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Chief Justice of Nigeria Hon.

Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, and other members of the Federal Executive Council for their continued support of this initiative.
