The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has confirmed the rescue of a day-old baby abandoned along a bush path near Crush Rock, behind the uncompleted Red Bricks Market in Mpape.
In a statement issued over the weekend, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, revealed that on January 3, 2025, at approximately 10:00 AM, police operatives from the Mpape Division’s Juvenile and Women Care Section (JWC) responded to a distress call and found the baby wrapped in cloth. The newborn was immediately taken to Mpape Primary Health Care Center, where a medical evaluation confirmed the baby was in stable condition.
Following a tip-off from the community, the baby’s mother, Khadija Ali, was arrested. During interrogation, she admitted to abandoning the child, citing financial difficulties and her husband’s abandonment as reasons for her actions.
The FCT Police Command strongly condemned the act of child abandonment, emphasizing its commitment to protecting society’s most vulnerable members. The rescued infant will be handed over to the Department of Social Welfare for appropriate care. Meanwhile, Khadija Ali will face prosecution under sections 14 and 16 of the Child Rights Act (CRA) 2003 after investigations are concluded.
The Command reassures the public of its dedication to justice and the welfare of children.
