Last Thursday, there was a significant jailbreak in the Niger Republic, causing major concern in Nigeria. Hundreds of terrorists, criminals, and drug traffickers managed to escape from Koutoukale prison on July 11, 2024. This incident has led to widespread fear in the Nigerian towns near the Niger border. People are worried that these dangerous individuals, especially the terrorists, might cross into Nigeria and continue their harmful activities.
In response to this, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has heightened its security measures. They are on high alert to prevent these escapees from entering Nigeria. The acting Deputy Comptroller General of NIS, M.C. Oki, signed a circular on behalf of the Comptroller General of NIS. The circular instructed all Command Comptrollers and officers stationed along the Niger-Nigeria border to be extremely vigilant. They are to closely monitor all suspicious movements, arrest any of the escaped prisoners, and report these incidents to the NIS.
The circular emphasized the urgency of this matter. It warned that the escaped terrorists and other criminals might try to sneak into Nigeria to join other terrorist groups and cause further chaos and destruction. An NIS officer informed our correspondent that the fear in the border towns is very real and persistent.
