The Federal Government has pledged a generous donation of N500 million to the Nigerian Legion in support of the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration.
This announcement was made by George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, during the launch of the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Emblem and Appeal Fund at the State House in Abuja.
During the event, President Bola Tinubu expressed his gratitude to the Nigerian Armed Forces for their relentless dedication to addressing the numerous security challenges facing the nation. He emphasized that without the armed forces’ commitment to stabilizing the country, the administration’s reform initiatives and economic strategies would be rendered ineffective.
“Regardless of the economic theories we advocate, security is paramount; without it, we cannot foster peace and development,” President Tinubu stated. He expressed his appreciation for their patriotic efforts, acknowledging the harsh realities they face. “You are the first line of defense for our nation. Thank you for your unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s unity, stability, and progress.”
The President reaffirmed that the welfare of security personnel would remain a top priority for the government. He also paid tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the country, assuring that their contributions would not be forgotten.
“We gather today to honor our fallen heroes, individuals who laid down their lives for the unity and progress of this nation. We are committed to upholding their values and principles as we pass on a legacy of unity and strength to future generations.”
He expressed his honor in launching the emblem, reiterating that the well-being of the armed forces personnel would always be paramount. “I want to thank each of you for your service,” he remarked.
Minister of Defence, Alhaji Abubakar Badaru, expressed his gratitude to President Tinubu for his unwavering support toward the welfare of current and former military personnel, as well as the families of the fallen heroes.
“Unveiling this Emblem symbolizes hope and serves as a reminder of our collective duty to support our Armed Forces and their families. The Armed Forces Remembrance Day is not merely a commemoration; it calls us to action,” he stated.
He highlighted the significance of the Appeal Fund being launched, which aims to provide essential support to veterans and their families. The funds raised will directly enhance welfare programs, offering critical services such as healthcare, education, and financial aid.
Retired Maj.-Gen. Abdulmalik Jibril, national chairman of the Nigeria Legion, commended the President for his continuous support, particularly for the significant donation.
The event was attended by prominent figures, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas.
