The administration of President Bola Tinubu has voiced its disappointment regarding Team Nigeria’s performance at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, where the squad failed to secure any medals. This has sparked a call for significant reforms in the country’s sports management.

In a statement posted on his official social media account, Sports Minister John Enoh expressed his dissatisfaction, labeling the team’s results as disheartening. He emphasized that the lack of medals is not merely an issue of participation but rather a symptom of deeper systemic problems that require urgent attention.

“Team Nigeria’s underwhelming showing at the 2024 Paris Olympics,” Mr. Enoh remarked, “is indicative of numerous underlying issues that must be addressed beyond just our presence at the Games.”

He advocated for a comprehensive reform of the sports sector in Nigeria to enhance its competitiveness on the world stage. “This initiative for reform seeks to strengthen the leadership and operational efficacy of our sports federations, which is crucial for elevating our performance internationally,” the minister stated.

Mr. Enoh further noted, “As we return home, it is imperative that we take measures to avert a repeat of the Paris setback. If this requires reevaluating the election process for our sports federations, we will do so. With the upcoming elections for these federations, it presents an ideal opportunity to ensure that only the most qualified individuals are positioned to lead our various sports organizations.”

His remarks have provoked a range of responses from Nigerians, many attributing the disappointing Olympic results to inadequate preparation.
