The federal government has rolled out a new initiative aimed at enhancing the ethical management of data among public servants through a comprehensive online course. This initiative, known as the Responsible Data Management Course, is a free educational resource designed to provide essential training in responsible data handling practices.
This course is a collaborative effort between the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) and Data.Org. It serves as a bridge between the theoretical framework established by the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 and the practical realities of data rights and responsibilities. The course aims to equip public servants with the skills necessary to navigate the complexities of data management and reduce vulnerabilities in public service. This initiative was announced by the NDPC in a statement released yesterday.
Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, emphasized the significance of this collaboration. “The partnership between the NDPC and Data.Org marks the beginning of a series of planned initiatives designed to equip civil servants with the knowledge and skills required to manage data effectively in an increasingly digital work environment. This is particularly important as we implement Digital Public Infrastructure,” Dr. Tijani stated.
The Responsible Data Management Course is specifically tailored for professionals who hold key positions related to data within federal and state Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs). This includes Heads of IT, Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs), Data Protection Officers (DPOs), IT and Cybersecurity Personnel, and other officers involved in data processing and privacy.
The course curriculum covers a wide range of topics essential for responsible data management. These include understanding the legal framework of data protection, practical strategies for safeguarding data, recognizing and mitigating data vulnerabilities, and ensuring compliance with data protection laws. By providing this training, the NDPC and Data.Org aim to foster a culture of ethical data management within the public sector, thereby enhancing the security and privacy of citizens’ information.
In addition to theoretical knowledge, the course offers practical tools and techniques that public servants can apply in their day-to-day roles. This hands-on approach is intended to make the principles of the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 more accessible and actionable, helping public servants to better understand their data management responsibilities and how to fulfill them effectively.
The launch of the Responsible Data Management Course represents a proactive step by the federal government to address the challenges posed by the digital transformation of public services. As public servants increasingly rely on digital tools and platforms, the need for robust data management practices becomes more critical. This course aims to ensure that public servants are well-prepared to handle data responsibly, thereby safeguarding public trust and enhancing the overall efficiency and security of public service operations.
