Ms. Adefunke Adeyemi has been re-elected as Secretary General of the African Civil Aviation Commission (AfCAC) during the organization’s 35th Ordinary Plenary Session held in Brazzaville, Congo on Thursday. Adeyemi garnered 22 votes in favor, while seven were opposed.

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, announced Adeyemi’s re-election through a statement from his Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Mr. Tunde Moshood. Keyamo attributed Adeyemi’s success to her robust support from stakeholders in the aviation sector.

“This resounding success demonstrates the unwavering confidence that AfCAC member States have in her visionary leadership and accomplishments,” he stated.

Keyamo emphasized that he is committed to fostering strategic diplomatic efforts with African Union Member States to bolster support for Adeyemi’s candidacy, enhancing Nigeria’s role in shaping the future of aviation on the continent.

“This victory is significant not just for Nigeria but for the entire African aviation sector,” he remarked. “Adeyemi’s exemplary leadership and innovative vision have positioned AfCAC to drive transformative changes throughout Africa.”

He reiterated Nigeria’s dedication to advancing AfCAC’s objectives and achieving the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM).

“To ensure a fair and transparent election process, an Election Commission was established according to AfCAC’s Rules of Procedure for Plenary Meetings,” he noted, adding that the commission included representatives from various regions of the African Union to uphold the integrity of the election.

It is reported that AfCAC is responsible for overseeing civil aviation matters across Africa and acts as the executing body for the Yamoussoukro Decision (YD), serving as a specialized agency of the African Union.

According to reports, AfCAC’s primary goal is to implement the Single African Air Transport Market, a vision aimed at uniting 37 member states to bolster Africa’s aviation competitiveness and connectivity.

Keyamo remarked, “Adeyemi’s re-election reaffirms her outstanding contributions to the Commission, particularly in promoting integration and sustainable growth within African aviation. Her tenure has been characterized by innovative initiatives designed to improve air transport efficiency, safety, and collaboration across the continent.”

With her renewed mandate, Adeyemi is set to further advance AfCAC’s goals, championing a cohesive, competitive air transport system for Africa.
