The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Transportation, will commence a transport palliative on Tuesday, December 24, 2024, offering a 50% discount on fares for 144 routes across Nigeria.
In a statement by Olujimi Oyetomi, the ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, the initiative, led by the Minister of Transportation, Senator Said Alkali, aims to ease travel for Nigerians heading to their loved ones during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
Road transport unions, including RTEAN, NURTW, GIGM, and ALBON, have been directed to deploy palliative buses to designated loading points early on December 24. In Abuja, departures will begin at 6 a.m. from Eagle Square.
In Lagos, passengers heading north will depart from Oshodi Terminal 3, while those traveling south will use Oshodi Terminal 2. Luxury buses will also provide evening departures from 6-7 p.m.
Passengers can enjoy the 50% discount until January 5, 2025, but are urged to avoid rushing, as the number of vehicles available is limited. The scheme covers state capitals nationwide, except Anambra, where Onitsha is the designated stop.
The initiative, featuring 708 vehicles, will run for 13 days, providing affordable travel options during the festive period.
