The Federal Government has suspended several senior officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) amid bribery allegations linked to controversial crossdresser Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky.
The allegations surfaced from blogger Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan, who claimed in viral videos that officers from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) received ₦15 million from Bobrisky to drop money laundering charges during his naira spraying incident in April. Following this incident, Bobrisky was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment.
Otse further alleged that Bobrisky had paid additional sums to secure a preferential placement within the prison system. While Bobrisky has denied these allegations, both the EFCC and NCoS have initiated investigations based on the claims made by the blogger.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board announced the suspensions, which are intended to facilitate a thorough investigation into the alleged infractions. The statement, signed by Ja’afaru Ahmed, assured that the findings of the investigations would be made public once concluded.
Among those suspended are Michael Anugwa, Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC) in charge of the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) in Kirikiri, Lagos State, and Sikiru Adekunle, DCC in charge of the Maximum Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) in the same location.
Additionally, ASC II Ogbule Samuel Obinna, serving at the MSCC in Afikpo, Ebonyi State, was suspended for allegedly escorting a convicted inmate outside the Custodial Centre. Another officer, Iloafonsi Kevin Ikechukwu, DCC in charge of the MSCC in Kuje, Abuja, was suspended for reportedly accepting payments on behalf of an inmate.
