The federal government of Nigeria on Wednesday declared that the Governing Council will be reconstituted as one of the demands made by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU)
According to the acting Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Chris Maiyaki, who pointed out that all had been put in place to ensure the reconstitution of the governing council.
Responding to newsmen in a media parley in Abuja, Maiyaki said that the council will be inaugurated once the list is consummated.
This development is to meet one of the demands placed by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in which a two-week ultimatum was issued to the Federal Government to constitute the Governing council.
In a bid to further the development of quality education in the country, He explained that the current 272 universities in the country are not sufficient to accommodate the ever-growing demand for university education by Nigerian youths, stressing that each year, Nigerian universities receive close to two million applications, only a small fraction of them are admitted.
He added that that is why there is a need for Nigeria to continue to increase access by establishing more universities to meet the demand for quality education in the country.
