Finidi George, the former Nigeria international, has stepped down from his position as head coach of the Super Eagles. His resignation comes just a month after assuming the role, and it has raised eyebrows across the football community.

In an interview, Colin Udoh, a former Super Eagles media officer, shed light on the reasons behind Finidi’s abrupt departure. According to Udoh, Finidi had a crucial meeting with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Thursday, June 13. During this meeting, the NFF assured Finidi of their support moving forward. However, at no point did they mention their intention to appoint a foreign technical adviser.

The shock came when Finidi landed in Port Harcourt after the meeting. Someone informed him that the NFF had indeed decided to bring in a foreign technical adviser. No one from the NFF had reached out to him during those crucial days, leaving Finidi feeling unwanted. Faced with this situation, he made the difficult choice to submit his resignation.

Finidi’s tenure as Super Eagles coach was brief but eventful. Unfortunately, the team faced setbacks in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. They suffered a 2-1 defeat against Benin Republic in Abidjan and managed only a 1-1 draw against South Africa at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

As the NFF searches for a replacement, questions linger about the future direction of the Super Eagles. Finidi’s departure highlights the challenges faced by national team coaches and the delicate balance between expectations and support.
