A five-story structure fell on Wednesday morning in the Anambra state local government area of Onitsha North.
Three people were said to have been rescued with injuries; at the time of filling this report, there are no incidents of any deaths that occurred.
Onitsha North local government’s Dennis Memorial Grammar School (DMGS) building fell on Wednesday morning.
Three people who would have been trapped in the building were rescued with minor injuries, according to an eyewitness testimony. “We were standing opposite the building before we heard that noise, but we could not run to the building because it was collapsing at that moment.”
A few hours after the collapse, Gov. Charles Soludo, who was gone on a formal assignment, ordered Chief Emeka Joseph Orji, the former Chairman of the Onitsha South local government area, to come to the scene with an escalator to aid in rescue efforts.
Orji states that this is the issue that both the Onitsha South and Onitsha North local government regions have been discussing.
“Observe the structure and you will see that it was inevitable for the building to collapse.”
“They went ahead and built a five-story building on top of a less than half-plot of land even though the soil is too weak.”
The governor called me to ensure that no lives were lost while I was rushing here to help, and we found out that three people had been saved.
Currently, Engineer Victor Meju and the COREN leadership in the state are on the scene attempting to determine the actual cause of the disaster.
