Former governorship aspirant for Lagos State under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Funso Doherty, has unveiled his rationale for transitioning to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In a recent interview, he articulated that Nigeria’s political landscape has effectively changed into a two-party system dominated by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the PDP.
Doherty expressed his intent to address the political dynamics of Lagos by fostering a cohesive opposition. He stated, “My move from ADC to PDP marks a pivotal moment in my political journey. My initial foray into politics was with the ADC during the last elections, where I ran for governorship, which allowed the public to become familiar with my candidacy.”
He further elaborated, “As many Nigerians are aware, our democratic framework, similar to other democracies utilizing a first-past-the-post system, tends to favor larger parties, resulting in a near two-party scenario. This is akin to the political setups in the United States with the Democrats and Republicans, and in the UK with the Labour and Conservative parties. We anticipate that this trend will persist.”
Doherty emphasized the necessity of aligning with a robust, unified opposition to effectively challenge the current incumbents.
“To confront the status quo in our political environment, it’s crucial to be part of a larger, consolidated opposition, and we believe this transition is a significant step toward achieving that goal. We aspire to contribute to this unification process,” he concluded.
