Former Education Minister Oby Ezekwesili has expressed a heartfelt prayer for Nigerians to achieve a “second independence” from what she refers to as domestic colonialists.
In her remarks celebrating Nigeria’s 64th independence anniversary, Ezekwesili criticized these domestic colonialists for prioritizing their self-interests over the welfare of the Nigerian people by undermining public office.
In a post on X, she shared her sentiments: “Nothing, and I truly mean nothing, can diminish the profound joy of loving one’s country and people felt upon returning home after time abroad.
“Regardless of the heartache caused by our nation’s challenges, I find solace in the scripture—‘Hope Maketh Not Ashamed.’ I remind myself that hope is boundless.
“As we celebrate this 64th Independence Day upon our return, my hopeful heart prays: ‘Lord, empower your people in their quest for a Second Independence—this time from those domestic colonialists who have repeatedly chosen to exploit public office for their selfish gains instead of governing for our collective benefit.’
“May our Lord, the Good-Good Father, strengthen our spirits on this Independence Day, my fellow citizens.”
