Former Governor of Imo State, Ikedi Ohakim, has firmly rejected rumors suggesting his candidacy for the upcoming President-General position of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, a prominent socio-cultural organization for the Igbo people.
Ohakim clarified that he has no aspirations to take on this role and is presently focused on the funeral arrangements for the late President-General, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu.
In a statement he personally authored, the ex-governor remarked, “I am unaware of any intentions to elect or appoint me as the next President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo. No one has approached me regarding this matter, nor have I shown interest in the position.”
His denial comes in light of widespread speculation indicating that certain groups were attempting to position him as Iwuanyanwu’s successor following the latter’s recent passing.
The former governor expressed his frustration over receiving numerous inquiries seeking clarification on the circulating reports.
“My attention has been drawn to media publications linking me to a supposed movement to elevate me as the next President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo globally,” Ohakim stated. “Let me make it clear: I implore those disseminating this harmful and irresponsible misinformation to cease immediately.”
Ohakim also called on the public to honor the memory of the late Iwuanyanwu, emphasizing that this moment is one for mourning rather than political maneuvering.
“Let us permit the Ndigbo to grieve and contemplate the legacy of the late Ahaejiagamba, which fostered peace and harmony within our organization and the Igbo community at large,” he added.
The former governor reiterated his lack of interest in the position and urged those responsible for the rumors to refrain from such actions.
