Prince Uche Secondus, the former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has expressed grave concerns that the 2027 elections may not take place, attributing this potential outcome to the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s systematic dismantling of democracy in Nigeria.

In a statement, which was signed by his Media Adviser, Ike Abonyi, Secondus criticized the APC for allegedly plotting to destabilize Nigeria through poor governance.

His remarks came in response to the recent governorship election held in Edo State, which he described as a clear example of “electoral fraud,” executed without adherence to legal standards or respect for the electorate’s choices.

The statement highlighted, “The results from recent off-cycle elections in Imo, Kogi, and Edo States reveal that the Independent National Electoral Commission, led by Mahmoud Yakubu, has shown no accountability for the disgraceful conduct of the 2023 elections that have cast a shadow over Nigeria.”

Secondus pointed out the APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje’s, alarming declaration that the party intends to replicate the electoral strategies used in Edo for upcoming elections in Ondo and Anambra States. He warned that if the ruling party continues on this path, the prospect of the 2027 elections may be jeopardized, as their aim appears to be the establishment of a one-party state by suppressing dissent.

“The essence of democracy lies in the presence of opposing voices that hold the ruling party accountable, yet the APC seems determined to lead Nigeria into ruin, stifling any form of dissent,” he stated.

He further emphasized that Nigeria’s democratic framework is precariously balanced due to widespread electoral malpractice. “If the outcomes of the Edo elections are accepted, future elections in Nigeria will face insurmountable challenges.”

Secondus condemned the overt manipulation of the Edo election, citing the intimidation and arrests of opposition figures and the collusion of critical players, including security forces and electoral officials. “The global community is observing the embarrassment we are inflicting on this esteemed system of governance, which other nations leverage for stability and development.”
