Funmilayo Theresa Ogun, the former state Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State, has confidently asserted that the All Progressives Congress (APC) will face defeat in any upcoming elections, citing the significant hardships inflicted upon the populace by the APC-led administration.
Ogun urged her fellow party members not to harbour doubts about the feasibility of unseating the ruling APC in the upcoming 2026 governorship election. She emphasized that the PDP enjoys immense popularity, strong appeal across 177 wards, and broad acceptance, positioning it well to thwart Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s bid for a second term and to set the stage for the 2027 presidential race.
While addressing the newly formed 20-member Caretaker Committee established by the national leadership of the party, Ogun emphasized the importance of unity within the PDP as they navigate the post-committee era. This address took place during a church service commemorating the end of her tenure and the inauguration of a new Consultation/Reconciliation/Mobilization office in Ado Ekiti, aimed at ramping up membership drives ahead of the 2026 elections.
Despite the party’s previous electoral setbacks and internal divisions, Ogun expressed optimism about restructuring and fortifying the PDP to effectively challenge the ruling party. She vowed that any self-serving actions that could undermine the party would be firmly opposed before the gubernatorial elections in 2026.
“Defeating the APC is entirely achievable; we have the resources to make it happen, especially as Nigerians grapple with economic hardships and begin to regret their choices in past elections,” Ogun stated. “We need to organize ourselves, identify and neutralize any internal dissenters, and actively engage the people of Ekiti to demonstrate our commitment to a comeback in 2026.”
Ogun called on the new caretaker committee to maintain impartiality, focus, and loyalty in their leadership, stressing that unity and collaborative efforts are crucial for overcoming the current challenges and achieving success in the forthcoming elections.
The newly established office in Ado Ekiti will serve as a hub for PDP members and interested citizens to foster the party’s message and present it as a viable alternative to the “struggling and faltering” APC.
Ogun urged Ekiti residents to move past previous mistakes and rally behind the PDP in the upcoming elections, asserting that the party remains the best vehicle for guiding Ekiti State and Nigeria toward a brighter future. “Given the escalating security issues, rising food costs, inflation, youth unemployment, and deepening national divisions, it is clear that the APC has let the people down and must be decisively rejected in every election,” she concluded.
