Tragedy struck in Jigawa State on Saturday as four teenage girls from the same family drowned in a pond at Malkaderi village, Gagarawa Local Government Area.
The unfortunate incident occurred when the girls went swimming on Saturday evening. According to DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, spokesperson for the Jigawa State Police Command, five girls had ventured into the pond, but only one, Sahura Audu, aged 8, survived. The others – Saina’u Musa (12), Fiddausi Ado (11), Habiba Musa (12), and Bahijja Musa (13) – were later found drowned and floating.
A joint rescue operation involving police officers and local divers led to the recovery of the victims. They were transported to Gagarawa Primary Health Care, where four were sadly confirmed dead, while Sahura was treated and subsequently discharged.
Jigawa State Commissioner of Police, CP AT Abdullahi, extended heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families and prayed for their eternal rest. He also urged parents and guardians to monitor their children closely, emphasizing the dangers of swimming in water bodies, particularly during the rainy season.
