A driver transporting gas in a tanker sustained injuries when his vehicle overturned along the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway on Wednesday.

The incident was confirmed by Adebayo Taofiq, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), in a statement obtained by PUNCH Online.

The driver’s identity had not been disclosed at the time of this report, but it was confirmed that he is receiving medical treatment after sustaining injuries to his hand.

According to Taofiq, the accident occurred earlier in the day when a loaded gas tanker overturned at Anthony Oke, heading towards Gbagada along the busy expressway. The swift intervention of LASTMA personnel, in coordination with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services, averted a potential disaster.

“Immediate action was taken by LASTMA and other emergency responders to address the situation. The tanker driver, who sustained injuries, was successfully rescued and is currently receiving medical treatment,” Taofiq said.

The Lagos State Fire Service, LASEMA Response Unit (LRU), and other emergency responders were quickly mobilized to the scene, where they implemented safety measures to prevent any potential hazards. Their prompt and coordinated efforts were crucial in containing the situation and preventing further complications.

LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, who was present at the scene, emphasized the agency’s commitment to ensuring road safety for all citizens. He confirmed that the tanker and its loaded gas cylinder have been safely evacuated, restoring normal traffic flow towards Gbagada, Iyana-Oworo, Car Wash, Ifako, and Toll Gate.

“The safety of our citizens remains our top priority, and we are grateful for the cooperation of everyone involved,” Bakare-Oki stated.
