Former member of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), George Moghalu, has denied rumors circulating on social media that he has defected to the Labour Party (LP).

Last week, social media was abuzz with claims that Moghalu had switched allegiance from the APC to the LP. However, speaking to journalists in Abuja, the Anambra-born politician dismissed these rumors, emphasizing that he does not change parties frequently. He clarified that his current focus is on his law degree from a private university in Abuja and his pursuit of a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) at the University of Abuja.

“You must understand that at my level in politics in this country, I have never jumped from one party to the other. However, if I must leave the APC for LP, it has to be consequent upon my signing a statement from a recognized representative or my media office. And not until that happens, I will say that I am still with the APC.”

Moghalu explained that the social media reports about his supposed defection to the LP had caused significant concern, prompting people worldwide to reach out for confirmation. He reassured them that, as of now, he remains with the APC.

“The process has to do with resigning membership of where I am now, not by proxy; but by formally writing to notify my Ward about my intention to leave the party and I will make the resignation public. I may not give any reason because I am at liberty to do so as it is my fundamental right.”

He further elaborated that if he decides to leave the APC, he will follow the proper procedure and make a public announcement. Moghalu also mentioned that he could choose to engage in politics without joining another political party, becoming an independent influencer or driver of political processes, which does not diminish his role as a political actor.

“It is not only until you belong to a political party that you are a politician. And let me repeat, if I decide to leave the APC I will announce it publicly,” he concluded.
